Skin Pimples: Types, Causes, and How to Get Rid of Them Safely

Skin spots are a common concern affecting people of all ages. From small bumps to more severe lesions, spots can be uncomfortable, unsightly, and in some cases, painful.

Find out the type of pimples that may appear with their characteristics:

  • Blackheads: These form when skin pores become clogged with sebum and dead cells. Exposure to air oxidizes this mixture, giving it a dark color.
  • Whiteheads: Similar to blackheads, but with a layer of skin covering the clogged pore, which prevents oxidation and maintains its white color.
  • Papules: These are small, red, inflamed bumps that form when blocked pores cause a reaction in the skin.
  • Pustules: Similar to papules, but with a white or yellow head on top, due to the accumulation of pus.
  • Nodules: Large, hard, painful pimples that develop deep in the skin. They are the result of intense inflammation in the follicle.
  • Cysts: Similar to nodules, but filled with pus. They can be painful and leave scars if not treated properly.

Now, you may be wondering what the causes are? Well, the appearance of pimples on the skin can be due to multiple factors:

  • Excess Sebum: Can clog pores, causing pimples to form.
  • Dead Cell Buildup: Can clog pores.
  • Bacteria: Can multiply in clogged pores, causing inflammation and pimple formation.
  • Hormonal changes: Especially during adolescence, menstruation, pregnancy or due to the use of certain medications, sebum production can increase and, therefore, the appearance of pimples.
  • Stress: Can worsen skin condition by triggering the release of hormones that increase sebum production.
  • Diet: Some foods high in sugar and fat can exacerbate flare-ups in predisposed individuals.

So how can we prevent pimples from appearing? First of all, it's key not to pop pimples. Although it may be tempting, squeezing pimples can lead to infections, scarring, and worsen inflammation. It's best to let them heal naturally or treat them with specific products.
On the other hand, maintain good facial hygiene. To do this, wash your face twice a day with a gentle cleanser that does not dry out the skin and avoid rubbing the skin excessively, as this can irritate it and make the spots worse.
Additionally, you can use topical treatments: Products with natural retinol can help reduce inflammation and eliminate acne-causing bacteria.

Therefore, moisturize your skin as it will be less prone to producing excess sebum. Opt for a light, oil-free moisturizer specially formulated for acne-prone skin.
You can also avoid using too much makeup, and choose non-comedogenic products so they don't clog your pores. Above all, always remember to remove your makeup before going to bed.
If the spots are persistent or severe, a dermatologist can offer you stronger treatments, such as oral medications, light therapy or chemical peels. Finally, adopting a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and water, along with a proper sleep routine and stress reduction, can help improve the condition of your skin.
